The brief for this residential inner city design and construction in the Sydney suburb of Enmore was to maximize and beautify the clients outdoor entertaining possibility’s whilst maintaining a functional capability. The result is an intelligent and responsivecourtyard environment with a practical and proportionate feature plunge pool.
To maximize the tight space, it was decided the pool would sit right on the boundary, with the rendered blockwork rising out of the pool as the boundary barrier. High level consideration at the design stage, and complexity in construction technique ensured an elegant solution to the pool fencing boundary was achieved – importantly, the footings were contained on the client’s property. The pools positioning allowed for increased safety. The neat glass fencing, which meets NSW Pool Boundary Regulation, gives a direct and unobstructed view from the house.
The use of natural materials around the pool deck - Spotted Gum hardwood decking, bluestone coping and cedar vertical slatted feature walls all provide interesting textural focal points from the house. The choices in natural material of decking, paving, walling and coping were also designed to afford a seamless connection into the space outward from the house. Colouration of the space works to make the pool the main feature of the landscape, complementing the existing architecture and style of the house and interior. The pool is fully tiled in mosaic by Bisazza.
Tropical plantings surrounding the pool and in the raised beds were chosen to enhance the resort style feel of the space. They also afford the clients further privacy whilst the pool and deck are in use. The climbing species Bougainvillea, Star Jasmine and Boston Ivy create depth and provide appeal with organic lines and growth patterns. Philodendron Xanadu, Silver Lady Ferns, Bromeliads and Frangipani give the pool and garden area instant lushness and soften the angles of the structural elements within the space.
This well executed outdoor space not only offers room for wining, dining and swimming, but also provides the practicality of integrating a secure parking space for the resident’s car. Hidden neatly under and behind the BBQ bench space is the pool equipment, the recycling bins and an outdoor undercover laundry area, all accessed from the carport level. Atmospheric lighting of the space was an integral part of the brief and extends the area’s usage into the evening.
